Ōtāhuhu is one of New Zealand’s oldest settlements.
Located on the narrowest isthmus in the world, its unique feature was the portage linking the Tāmaki River and the Manukau Harbour.
In 1848 the village of Ōtāhuhu was established by 70 retired Fencible soldiers and their families escaping the Irish potato famine.
To celebrate the 175th anniversary, Ōtāhuhu Historical Society has invited descendants Rosetta Allen and Cathy Curry to tell their story.
