The Auckland Pride Centre started as a Gay Men's initiative called the Isherwood Trust. It provided an alcohol and drug free social venue for over 10 LGBTQIA + community groups, an information service and lending library.
During the 1990s, it played a major role in promoting queer issues and questioning politicians on their stances towards LGBTQIA + issues during central and local elections.
It also organised a wide range of LGBTQIA + events from tea dances and poetry readings to the 1990 Auckland Gay Mardi Gras and the annual Coming Out Day parade.
This exhibition displays some images from these events.
