Details

Many Dalmatian immigrants settled in West Auckland in the early twentieth century. The first orchard was established in Oratia in 1903 by Ivan and Katherine Vella.

With rich fertile soil, ideal for fruit and grape growing, many more Dalmatian settlers bought land in and around Oratia, Henderson and New Lynn. They set up family businesses with their orchards and vineyards.

Presenter Ivan Pivac will show photos and talk about this vibrant and hard-working West Auckland community.
