"The approach is by ferry boat, which leaves Auckland every half hour, landing one at a fine ferro-concrete wharf at the foot of a gigantic cliff, partially covered with native trees and creepers." Beautiful Birkenhead: Auckland's Most Healthful Marine Suburb (1913)

The original Birkenhead wharf was built in 1882, providing access to the suburb by sea for the first time.

The wharf was rebuilt between 1907 and 1910, just to the west of the original, and land reclaimed at the time was used to develop Hinemoa Park in the 1920s.

The rebuilt wharf is still in use today. This walk looks at the history of Birkenhead Wharf and Hinemoa Park and will be illustrated with photographs from the collections of Auckland Libraries.
