Details

Blockhouse Bay history goes back to 1860 with the building of a blockhouse during the New Zealand Land Wars. The name of the area, Blockhouse Bay, relates to this military defence post built above the bay.

The story of Te Whau Blockhouse is detailed in this photograph exhibition, held in Armanasco House. This farm cottage on the village green is the oldest dwelling in the area, built by an Italian immigrant in 1890.

Armanasco House is now the base for the Blockhouse Bay Historical Society. Inside, a large collection of historical photographs and research data can be viewed.

The display details the development of Blockhouse Bay, including camping days on the beach, the history of the yacht club, activities of early settlers and the suburb as we know it today.
