Event details

As Auckland has evolved into a multicultural city, the Cathedral of St Patrick and St Joseph has adapted to meet the changing needs of its people.

The cathedral rests on part of Ngāti Whātua's tribal lands, gifted to Auckland by Chief Te Kawau.

The guided tour will explore the ways in which one of New Zealand's busiest churches continues to meet new challenges and contribute to the city's vibrant culture.

It will also trace the building's rich history and culture, its transformation from the original wooden chapel and school to one of Auckland's first stone buildings, and on to the fine Gothic structure of today.

The tour on Friday 12 October will include a demonstration of the Cathedral's organ which has many of the characteristics of 18th century German organ building, and is one of a small number of mechanical action instruments in New Zealand.
