Event details

Join us for an illustrated talk about the heyday of the Manukau Harbour.

Onehunga is on one of the harbours navigable channels. It was a hub for naval ships, and later for coastal traders and inner harbour ferries.

The wreck of the Orpheus and the loss of 189 lives on the Manukau Bar is New Zealand’s worst shipwreck. But the Orpheus was one of many wrecks and grounding that happened on the Manukau.

The coastal and ferry timetables created a momentum and atmosphere of their own. Family and friends would crowd the wharf on a Sunday afternoon to farewell passengers taking the overnight trip to New Plymouth.

This talk is presented by the Manukau Harbour Restoration Society (MHRS).
