Event details

Join the Tree Council for our Annual General Meeting followed by a screening and discussion of a 1978 NZ National Film Unit archive film. The extraction and milling of Kauri created a culture that shaped west Auckland and New Zealand's history.

Dr Nick Waipara and Sandra Coney explain the ecological and cultural history shown in the film, a documentary that looks at the ancient conifer and its relationship with people.

Archive footage evokes the pioneer days: kauri dams, woodsmen dwarfed by felled trunks, and the lesser known stories of the Dalmatian gum hunters scaling sky-scraping trunks. Thanks to Archive NZ.

Please note this event will only take place if Auckland is in Alert Level 1
