Event details

It was to have been the happiest day of her life - her wedding day, but instead the young bride Mavis would be told the tragic news of her mother Ernestina's death at the hands of her uncle. The brutal crime made headlines around the country and the infamy of it all stained the name of the street so much that residents petitioned to have it changed a year later.

Historian Lisa Truttman examines the murder, the life of Ernestina Norgrove née Henderson, and the legal aftermath that saw the murderer Alan George Norgrove walk away a free man after less than 14 years in prison.
