Event details

The Great Feast of Remuera was held on the land between Ohinerau/Mt Hobson and Te Kōpuke/Mt St John in May 1844. Iwi in Tāmaki Makaurau and Waikato joined to show their strength to Northland iwi and the government. Present were 3000-4000 guests who were fed 11,000 baskets of potatoes, 9,000 sharks and 100 pigs. Governor Robert Fitzroy was in attendance. The feast was captured in a painting by Joseph Jenner Merrett in 1844 conveying the scale and grandeur and historical detail of the day.
