Event details

Proclaimed to be 'Auckland's Greatest Theatre', The St James Theatre opened in 1928.

The theatre's past included vaudeville shows, musicals, comedy, theatre, dance, royal command performances and movies.

The future of the theatre is a bit more checkered. It closed in 2007 after a fire in an adjacent cinema and an electrical fire in 2015.

Finance for a planned apartment block next door would have helped complete the restoration.

Join George Farrant as he talks about this gorgeous building with a sad exterior, but well preserved Spanish-Renaissance style interior.

George is an Auckland Council Principal Heritage Advisor.
